River Lapwing (Vanellus duvaucelii) is a resident bird of India that inhabits large rivers and lakes, preferring wide, slow moving rivers with sand banks or gravel bars and islands. This lapwing is also in the Near Threatened category of IUCN as its survival is being endangered by habitat degradation and loss due to encroachments, flooding and alteration of the river flow by building barriers; hunting and collection of eggs and chicks by humans, dogs and predators.
