Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) is a large white wading bird with a unique long, flat, spoon-shaped dark bill which becomes broader and yellow at the tip. Also called Common Spoonbill, it is a widespread breeder across southern Eurasia, with the more northerly population migrating to the tropics in winter. India hosts both migratory and resident populations in its western and southern parts. Breeding adult has a short white crest and a yellow breast patch. Though this bird figures in the ‘least concern’ category of IUCN Red List, its population has been showing a downward trend due to various factors, which include habitat degradation and egg-harvesting.
